    Student dissertation/ Internship opportunities at CMLRE

    The Centre for marine Living Resources and Ecology (CMLRE), Ministry of Earth Sciences, Kochi, India; CMLRE provides dissertation and internship opportunities to selected Post-graduate/B. Tech students as a part of their curriculum while pursuing university-level education.The application for MSc/B. Tech dissertation and internship programme in CMLRE will be considered twice in a year (April and November). For students seeking a vibrant and dynamic research environment, CMLRE offers various ocean-related disciplines such as Physical Oceanography, Marine Biology & Ecology, Marine Biogeochemistry, Marine Biotechnology, Marine Fisheries, and Marine Bioinformatics studies to pursue their dissertations and internship work.

    A. Eligibility Criteria
    • The applicant must be a student of a recognized University/College or Institution in India pursuing M.Sc./M F.Sc/B.Tech/M. Tech (or equivalent) in Marine Sciences including Physical Oceanography, Chemical Oceanography, Marine Biology, Zoology, Botany, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, and other relevant engineering or postgraduate programmes.
    • Students in their final or pre-final semester are eligible to apply.
    • Dissertation/Internship is allowed for a period of 4 to 12 months.
    B. Application Process
    • Duly filled in application form (format attached), forwarded (signed and sealed) by the Head of the Department/Institution to be submitted to director[at]cmlre[dot]gov[dot]in or ac[at]cmlre[dot]gov[dot]in.
    • No fees required for the internship/Dissertation.
    • No remuneration/stipend/fellowship will be paid for the Internship/Dissertation.
    • a. Additional documents required:
      • Curriculum Vitae (CV) with recent photograph of the student.
      • Academic transcripts.
      • Proposed area of interest or a brief synopsis.
    • b. Selection of mentor/supervisor
      • Based on the applications and the applicant's research interests, the Academic Cell of CMLRE may allocate a suitable supervisor to the students with the approval of the competent authority
    • c. Selection Procedure
      Selection of students and allocation of a research guide will be based on:
      • Relevance of the subject area to the institute’s mandate.
      • Availability of a mentor/scientist to guide the student.
      • Academic merit.
      • The final decision of allotment rests with the Institute's competent authority.
      • The selected students will be intimated through email by the Academic Cell of CMLRE.
    • d. Confirmation of Joining:
      • Students must confirm their joining in CMLRE through email within 7 working days of receiving the email of their selection.
      • Failure to confirm within this stipulated time frame will result in the cancellation of the application.
      • Upon joining, it is mandatory for students to bring all original documents supporting the claims made in the application form. Copies of these documents should be submitted to CMLRE.
    C. Facilities available
    • Various laboratories, library, and computational facilities.
    • Opportunities to participate in Scientific cruises and field work.
    • Platform to interact with scientists of different fields depending on the availability.
    • Access to Research Journals through Institutional subscriptions.
    • Canteen facilities (working days).
    • Initial one-week accommodation (for limited students) in the CMLRE transit hostel for outstation candidates, subject to availability.
    D. Responsibilities of the Student
    • Must follow the code of conduct and research ethics of the host institute.
    • Must work under the guidance of the assigned scientist/supervisor.
    • All data/samples and information generated as part of the dissertation/internship should be submitted to CMLRE after completing the program.
    • Should submit two copies of the final report/dissertation to CMLRE.
    • Must acknowledge the CMLRE and MoES in their dissertation/publications, if any.
    E. General Conditions
    • The internship/dissertation does not imply any commitment to future employment.
    • No accommodation and transport allowance shall be provided to the dissertation/Internship students.
    • CMLRE holds the right to terminate the programme for misconduct or policy violations.
    • Students are expected to carry their own laptops or basic personal accessories unless it is provided.
    • Students must hold research ethics, avoid plagiarism, and follow data confidentiality and IPR guidelines.
    • Data or samples provided should not be used for any commercial or unauthorized academic purpose. Any Publication/Communication to any Journal that results from the work should have the consent of the supervising Guide and CMLRE.
    • Students must comply with all safety regulations, especially if involved in laboratory or field work.
